Department of Chesapeake Encampment
 
Chuck Poland, Dick Randolph, Phil Sheridan, Dick Uplinger and Wayne Miesen attended the Department of Chesapeake Encampment in Lynchburg on April 26th, 2014.
Memorial Day Commemorations May 24, 2014
 
Two Memorial Day Commeorations were held:
 
At the City Cemetery on Tazewell Avenue, a memorial ceremony was held for Cpl. Allen Cross Hippey, who was born on September 25, 1846 in Lancaster County, PA, the son of William & Elizabeth (Cross) Hippey. He died on August 10, 1896.

Cpl. Hippey enlisted with the Pennsylvania 135th Regiment, Co. K on August 12, 1862 and mustered out with the company on May 24, 1863. He mustered into service with the 186th Regiment, Co. K on May 16, 1864, was promoted to Corporal on July 1st 1864, and mustered out with the company on August 15, 1865.
 
He was a Civil Engineer, and the General Superintendent of the west division of the Norfolk & Western Railroad.
 
At Evergreen Cemetery on Summit Avenue, a memorial ceremony was held for Capt. (or Maj.) Robert H. Day, who died on 11 January 1929.

Capt. Day served with the 56th Pennsylvania Infantry, and received several citations for gallantry. He escaped from Libby Prison.
 
He was Norfolk & Western Railroad’s first road foreman, and worked with the Roanoke streetcar system. Day Avenue is named after him
